Hope Historical Society

A Landscape trail between Hope and Castleton

Produced by members of Hope and Castleton Historical Societies
as part of the joint HLF funded project carried out in 2012 – 2013

Follow in our footsteps and see if you can discover the many sites along this trail which tell the history behind the landscape. We hoped to find a lost medieval route between the villages but instead gained insights into medieval field systems, old farming practices and relicts of lead mining.

The trail is 7Km long and will take about three hours. You can start in either village although the description is from Castleton to Hope and back again.

Download the Castleton and Hope Medieval Historical Landscape mp3 audio trail and copy it to your mp3 player, iPod, iPad or mobile phone. You can then take your mobile device for a walk to follow the route of this self-guided tour of Castleton and Hope’s medieval and later past.

You will discover the history behind the landscape and its routeways, fields, lead mines, defences and buildings. Your guides are Kay Harrison of Castleton and Robert Watson of Hope. The trail is the result of the research of members of Hope and Castleton Historical Societies and other volunteers.
