Accommodation in the Hope Valley

The Samuel Fox at Bradwell is a country inn serving traditional and contemporary cuisine, using local, fresh ingredients and home-made produce.  It has extremely well appointed en-suite bedrooms and it’s the perfect location for exploring the Peak District National Park.  The Samuel Fox is close to Castleton, Hathersage, Edale and the Pennine Way, and within easy reach of Chatsworth, Matlock, the spa town of Buxton, and the many historical houses run by English Heritage and the National Trust.

Since October 2012 the Samuel Fox has been under the management of its new owner, James Duckett.  James is a chef with international experience, having worked under some of our most celebrated Michelin starred chefs and in top restaurants internationally - in the UK, France, Spain, Holland, Australia and the Caribbean.  He has run his own restaurants in Spain and more recently in Devon and now the Samuel Fox, which is James’s first pub venture.

In his first year his cooking was rewarded with recommendations in the Michelin Guide, the Good Food Guide and two rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide. In January 2014 he won the ‘Best Newcomer’ award in the Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards and secured one of the first Eat Derbyshire gold awards for quality. The Samuel Fox also has an AA five star rating for its accommodation and Trip Advisor certificates of excellence for both its food and accommodation.

For weekend breaks, longer holidays, excellent food, wine and real ales, you will always receive a warm welcome at the Samuel Fox.

luxury hotel accommodation
Converted from a 500 year old inn, The George was originally an alehouse on the old packhorse routes.

When Charlotte Bronte visited her friend at Hathersage, she visited The George, owned at that time by James Morton, who had acquired it from James Eyre, a member of the influential local Eyre family.

Bronte was so enchanted by the area and its people, that she was inspired to write Jane Eyre. She took the name of the Eyre family for the main character, renamed Hathersage as 'Morton', after the then owner of The George and based Mr Rochester's home on nearby North Lees Hall.

All rooms are en-suite, with tea and coffee making facilities, tv, study or reading area, free wifi and telephone access.

There is some small mystery over which Sir William the road and the hotel are named for. Was it owner of nearby Stoke Hall - Sir William Cavendish, or the then Lord of the Manor of Eyam - Sir William Saville. Sir William Bagshawe's picture now graces the hotel board, but the road was named before he was born.
