As you wander across Kinder Scout, or meander up Mam Tor, you may think you hear the sound of distant music. If the date happens to be Sunday 11th June then you may be right as that is when the tiny Derbyshire village of Edale is holding its annual Edale Country Day. Music is special to the villagers of Edale, inspiring some to make a career of it, including award winning folk singer Bella Hardy who was raised in the valley. It seems right therefore that when selecting entertainment for the show, that music should be central to the day. A stalwart of the show, Castleton Silver Band, with a sound evocative of country shows, is a wonderful showcase of musical talent from around the Hope Valley. Picking the pace up are the young musicians of the Hope Valley College Big Band, whose musical talent belies their age, and who will have you tapping your feet as you relax in the sun. And not forgetting the traditional musical accompaniment to Chapel Morris Men, who are always a welcome addition to the day. An exciting addition to this year’s programme is the LahdiDah vintage vocal harmony group, singing a repertoire of songs from the 1920’s to the 1950’s.

But whilst the music may paint the backdrop to the show, there is so much more to see and do. Showcasing rural crafts and vintage vehicles, as well as plenty of children’s activities, and lots of high quality stalls, Edale Country Day has become one of the unmissable events in the Peak District calendar.

“People come back to this show year after year”, says organiser Angela Bradley. “There’s always something new for them to see, as well as lots of old favourites”.

You couldn’t have a country show without animals, and alongside the displays of local sheep and poultry will be pony rides, the ever popular falconry display, as well as the riotous dog and duck herding.

This is a show where families come and spend the whole day, so there is an excellent selection of food and drink available on site. The tea tent is packed full of quality homemade food, and a barbecue runs all day cooking burgers, sausage and bacon supplied by local farm shop, Watson’s. If that wasn’t enough there will also be the Edale Wood Fired Pizza Company, as well as a licensed bar and traditional ice-cream van.

One of the highlights of the day is the welcoming-in of the fell-runners, who will cross the finishing line around mid-day in the Edale Fell Race, part of the Accelerate Gritstone 2017 series.

Edale Country Day takes place on Edale playing field, next to the main car park, from 10.30am-4.30pm on Sunday June 11th. Entrance is £4 for adults £1 for children. Under-5’s are free. Parking is £3
