Hathersage Gala Week 2013
July 6th - July 13th

Gala sea
hathersage_gala_well_dressing_2011son in the valley is one of the highlights of the year. A chance for us to get out there and mingle with our friends and neighbours and also for visitors to the Valley to meet the locals and see just how fun and friendly we are and how much we have to celebrate.

The Gala wouldn't be the Gala without the amazing well dressings.   Weeks of work go into creating these fabulous displays using only natural materials such as flowers, leaves and berries. Take time to admire the finished products during Gala Week.

Wandering around Hathersage in the weeks leading up to the Gala, you will start to see the scarecrows appearing. The competition is quite fierce and you can expect some fabulous creations.

There's lots on offer each year, such as exhibitions of the work of local artists, children's art competitions and a range of specialist art workshops as well as traditional folk tales, live music and traditional entertainment.
Why not wander round Hathersage's open gardens, or join in yourself? Prizes are on offer for the green fingered, and people who would like to tour the gardens can obtain a map showing them where the entries are located.
The more active among us can enter the fell race or the junior fun run or join in one or more of the many sporting activities on offer during the week, including cricket, football and hockey.
With many events and activities ideally suited to the children such as picnics and face painting, walks and  treasure hunts, this is a great week of family fun.
As always, the highlight of the week is the crowning of the Gala Royal Family and the procession through the village, which is followed by fun and games on the football field and around the village. The gala committee works hard every year to ensure a range of new activities as well as the return of the old favourites.  Will the climbing wall be back? Will the village split into teams for the tug of war or will you settle down to watch a Rounders or Cricket Tournament? What about a Tea Dance, Darts & Dominos or a car treasure hunt?
No gala week in Hathersage is ever complete without the Talent show. Are you a singer or a comedian? Expert slight of hand, a juggler or do you have a unique talent that you are bursting to share? Your audience awaits you.
There's lots of fun to be had in the evenings as well. Test your general knowledge by taking part in the pub quiz or have a flutter on the bingo.
Full advantage is taken of Hathersage Lido; after all, what's the point in having an olympic sized open air swimming pool in the heart of the village and from which you have amazing views of this beautiful part of the country if you don't enjoy it?

Dedication - 7th July 6pm at the Methodist Church Well Dressing
Gala programmes are available in many of the local shops and help to raise money. Your support would be appreciated.
This year's Scarecrow Competition will be 'Adverts'.
