hathersage gala

July 1st - July 8th

Gala season in the Hope Valley is one of the highlights of the year. A chance for us to get out there and mingle with our friends and neighbours and also for visitors to the Valley to meet the locals and see just how fun and friendly we are and how much we have to celebrate.

The Gala wouldn't be the Gala without the amazing well dressings. Weeks of work go into creating these fabulous displays using only natural materials such as flowers, leaves and berries. Take time to admire the finished products during Gala Week.

There's lots on offer each year, and every year has a range of different activities and entertainment. In the past this has included exhibitions of the work of local artists, children's art competitions, talent shows and a range of specialist art workshops as well as live music and traditional entertainment.

2016 saw the introduction of a new event - NINJA WARRIOR ASSAULT COURSE! This proved very popular and lots of fun!

Every third year many of the green thumbed in Hathersage open up their fabulous gardens to visitors. On these years, those who would like to visit them can obtain a map showing them where the entries are located.  The Gala Programme for those years also gives residents details of how to enter your garden.

The more active among us can enter the fell race or the junior fun run or join in one or more of the many sporting activities on offer during the week, including cricket, football and hockey.

With many events and activities ideally suited to the children such as punch and judy shows, face painting, walks and treasure hunts; this is a great week of family fun.

As always, the highlight of the week are the two Saturdays' events. The crowning of the Gala Royal Family on the first weekend followed by fun and games in the village and the carnival procession through the village on the final Saturday, which is followed by entertainment, games, and stalls on the village football field. The gala committee works hard every year to ensure a range of new activities as well as the return of the old favourites. Will the fairground rides be back? Will the village split into teams for the tug of war or will this be the year you can settle down to watch a Rounders or Cricket Tournament? Perhaps there will be a Wheelbarrow Race, Darts & Dominos or a Car Treasure Hunt?

There's lots of fun to be had in the evenings as well. Test your general knowledge by taking part in the pub quiz or have a flutter on the bingo. And of course, no gala week in Hathersage is ever complete without a its big Last Night Sendoff. Previous years' entertainment has included band nights, discos and talent shows. So whether this year you will be rocking it to a great band, boogying on down to the best that disco has to offer, or showing off your expert slight of hand, juggling skills or comedy talent, Hathersage is the place to be.

Full advantage is taken of Hathersage Lido; after all, what's the point in having an olympic sized open air swimming pool in the heart of the village and from which you have amazing views of this beautiful part of the country if you don't enjoy it?

hathersage_gala_well_dressing_2011The theme for 2016 was "Best Of British".  Check back later for the theme for 2017 - And then why not join in and create a themed Scarecrow of your own in the Scarecrow Competition?
