footballFootball is one of those sports that can bind us all together, or drive us all apart! Here in the Hope Valley we lend loud support to our local teams, which are mainly all found in the Hope Valley Amateur League. Many of the towns and villages in the Peak District have a football team playing in the Amateur League, from Winster Wasps to Bakewell Town. Why not go along to support the village you’re staying in? Fixtures and match dates can be found on the Hope Valley Amateur League website.

If you fancy showing off your nifty football skills or think you can bend it like Beckham then there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Many of the leisure centres within travelling distance of the Hope Valley, such as Queen’s Park in Chesterfield, Wirksworth or Chapel-en-Frith, offer indoor or outdoor football pitches or playing fields, so you can get your mates together and have a friendly 5-a-side.

In nearby Baslow, the fun game of Walking Football has been introduced. This is a Derbyshire Village Games project which aims to get people in more rural areas active.

Most of the parks in Hope Valley and the surrounding area offer a chance for a spontaneous kickabout. Manor Park in Glossop even has a 5-a-side kickabout area as well as an informal sports area as does Memorial Park in Whaley Bridge. Or why not go over to Chatsworth and take advantage of their 100 acre park for a picnic and a quick game?

A holiday in the Hope Valley makes an ideal base for the footie fan – Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United are a mere 13 miles away, Old Trafford is 40 miles away and with the M1 only a few miles away, you are well placed to take a longer trip to indulge your football passions.

So whether it’s a tour round the big clubs, a group game of footie or a bit of bonding time between you and the kids, the Hope Valley is the football fan’s friend.  Make sure that wherever you go, you’ve got a football ready just in case; after all there’s nothing that brings the locals together more than a footie game but be warned, we are rather competitive!
