gala week
22 - 31 July 2017

stoney middleton well dressing 1936 picThe first well dressing in Stoney Middleton took place in 1936 and today it is one of the most important events in the village calendar.

The committee meets to plan the dressing of the well, which is normally created from flowers and other natural items, and to decide on the week's activities. This normally begins with the blessing of the well.

Stoney Middleton Gala Week is enjoyed by villagers and visitors alike, with a wide range of activities to suit everyone. Cream teas, art exhibitions, fun for the children such as face painting, fancy dress, treasure hunts and discos, a wide range of sports and activities, live music and much more.

Many church resizedof the events centre around St Martin's Church, parts of which date back to the 15th Century and which is reputed to be one of only two octagonal churches in existence in the country.

As with many of the villages in the Hope Valley, Stoney Middleton holds a scarecrow competition. Each year's theme is different and local people compete to win a prize for the most imaginative creation.

bbq 1Imagination and a sense of fun are not things we lack here in the villages of the Hope Valley. From margarine tub boat races to grown men and women reliving their childhoods by making spectacular dens on the playing field and entering kite flying competitions ('helping' the children, naturally!) this is a fun packed week for the family.

Those of a competitive nature can fight it out in the trivia quizzes held in the local pub, or enter one of the races held on the sports field. The more professional sportsperson can enter the fell race that is normally held during gala week.

It's always nice to end a busy day with a drink and some delicious barbecue or a pie and pea supper, and Stoney Middleton offers that too.
