treak cliff cavern

Blue John Stotreak cliff cavene. A colour banded form of fluorspar that has been sought after for thousands of years and is only found here in our very own Hope Valley. Treak Cliff Hill is the only place in the world that you will find naturally occurring Blue John.

Treak Cliff Cavern is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and is of great geological importance. Although mining takes place in parts of the cavern, all the Blue John Stone on the visitor trail is preserved.

treak cliff batLong after the lead and tin that were the reason people first went underground here were no longer being mined, excavation of the highly prized Blue John Stone has continued. Items thought to have been made of Blue John have been found in the ruins of Pompeii and nearby Chatsworth House has a fine collection of Blue John items, such as vases and columns.

The larger pieces have now all been mined but many smaller ones remain and are used to make ornaments, decorative bowls and jewellery.

However - Blue John Stone, beautiful as it is, is not the only reason to take a trip to Treak Cliff Cavern. Boasting some of the finest stalactites in the Peak District, a range of fossils buried in the limestone walls and a colony of bats, Treak Cliff is a fascinating place to visit.

Take a guided walk and learn how 18th Century miners reached the Blue John, using only hand tools. See The Pillar – the largest piece of Blue John ever found. Step back 330 million years to when the Hope Valley was an ocean floor and realise you are standing in an ancient coral reef. Learn how the caves were formed.
